Day 3: Tangkahan

A 4WD car took us from Bukit Lawang to Tangkahan, about 2 to 3h drive.

The driver spoke little english, but he exactly knew where the picture-points were located.

He dropped us off at a bridge that was supposed to lead us to an elephant camp...

Because of logging, the habitat of the wild elephant is getting smaller, so the animals come out of the jungle to look for food in the villages.

But, the locals can not afford to lose their harvest, so traps were put to keep the elephants out of the villages.

However, domesticated elephants are now used as a jungle patrol.

The elephant camp offers as a solution to both villagers (employment) as wild and domesticated elephants. The visit supports the preservation of the forest and to protect the elephants.
